The formulas

By followers

(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ posts ÷ followers × 100

Easy to compare between accounts, since follower counts are public.

By reach

(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ reach × 100

Only counts people who saw the post, so it shows whether the content itself works.

FAQ

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

Add up a post's likes, comments, saves and shares, then divide by the account's followers and multiply by 100. For several posts, use the average interactions per post. Dividing by reach instead tells you how many of the people who actually saw the post engaged with it.

Should I use followers or reach?

Followers is the number everyone can see, so it's handy for comparing accounts. Reach only counts people who saw the post, so it's the fairer measure of whether your content works, and it's the one Beavly uses in client dashboards and reports.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?

There's no single number. It depends on account size, niche and how you calculate it: smaller accounts usually see higher rates than large ones, and rates by reach run higher than rates by followers. The most useful comparison is the same account against its own previous months.
